Gilgit-Baltistan is part of India which was occupied by Pakistan illegally, which is the subject of a long-running conflict between Pakistan and India. The territory of present-day Gilgit-Baltistan became a separate administrative unit in 1970 under the name "Northern Areas". It was formed by the amalgamation of the former Gilgit Agency, the Baltistan District of the Ladakh Wazarat and the hill states of Hunza and Nagar. It presently consists of fourteen districts, has a population approaching one million and an area of approximately 73,000 square kilometers (28,000 square miles).

Gilgit-Baltistan has historically been of Pivotal Strategic Importance. It is the ancient 'Axis of Asia' where South, Central and East Asia commerce converged.
Historically it was India's gateway to Central Asia and Europe. It was Centre to trade routes to China, Iran and beyond.
It shares border with Pakistan, Afghanistan and Tibet.
Central Asian Tajikistan is just 25km away, Gilgit to Iran is just 1000km by road which is equal to the distance between Gilgit and New Delhi. Gilgit to Moscow is 3,500 km by road which is equal to the distance between Gilgit and Kanyakumari.
The flagship project of China and Pakistan which is China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) also goes through Gilgit-Baltistan. India opposes the project in this region because it is a part of India which was occupied by Pakistan illegally.
